JOYCE: Jülich Observatory for Cloud Evolution
At JOYCE we operate a multitude of new and state-of-the-art ground-based active and passive remote sensing instruments for ABL vertical profiling and cloud and precipitation observations. Instead of flying through the cloudy atmosphere with aircraft or weather balloons, we observe from the surface with upward pointed sensors, complementing similar downward measurements by satellites from space. JOYCE is part of the European ACTRIS (Cloudnet) research infrastructure. The JOYCE Core Facility (JOYCE-CF) is a joint collaboration between the University of Cologne, the University of Bonn and Forschungszentrum Jülich combining weather radar and ground-based profiling. Cloud and precipitation research in the Rhineland-Region is coordinated within CPEX-LAB, a competence center within the Geoverbund ABC/J. Most importantly however, no operations of JOYCE would be possible without the technical support of Rainer Haseneder-Lind.
