At JOYCE we operate a multitude of novel and state-of-the-art ground-based active and passive remote sensing instruments for ABL vertical profiling and cloud and precipitation observations. Instead of flying through the cloudy atmosphere with aircraft or weather balloons, we observe from the surface with upward pointed sensors, complementing similar downward measurements by satellites from space. JOYCE is part of the European ACTRIS research infrastructure. JOYCE is a joint collaboration between the University of Cologne and Forschungszentrum Jülich and we work closely with together with University of Bonn combining weather radar and ground-based profiling. Cloud and precipitation research in the Rhineland-Region is coordinated within CPEX-LAB, a competence center within the Geoverbund ABC/J.
