Information on the BMD seminar

Five different types of talks are held within the BMD seminar series.
BMD actually stands for "Bachelor-Master-Doctorate". The Tuesday time
slot is typically assigned to meteorology talks, the Thursday time
slot to geophysics, however, in case of schedule conflicts these
assignments may be abandonned. All talks and times are announced via
the webmasters by email to the whole institute. The following
paragraphs give you an overview of what you can expect in the
different seminar talks and if you are expected to attend.

Within the Bachelor program "Geophysik und Meteorologie", students
give seminar talks at the beginning (Bachelor seminar, BACHSEM) and at
the end (Bachelor colloquiumm, BACHAR) of their Bachelor thesis. Both
talks are typically given in German and should be attended especially by
Bachelor students of the semester 3 and upward. The Bachelor seminar
also targets at the scientists of the research group where the Bachelor
thesis is being written. Everybody is allowed to ask questions and join
the discussion after the talk. The Bachelor colloquium is the final
presentation of the Bachelor candidate. Again, in addition to the Bachelor
students of the semester 3 and upwards, the scientists from the respective
research focus, geophysics or meteorology, are expected to attend.
The Bachelor colloquium ends with a scrutiny by the examiners which the
general audience may witness but may not pose any questions.

Within the Master program "Physics of the Earth and Atmosphere",
students give seminar talks when wrapping up their project work (PROJ) and
at the end of their Master thesis (Master colloquium, MASTR). Both talks
are given in English. In the project work seminar talk the candidate
typically presents first investigations and a feasibility analysis, as
well as mathematical and physical tools needed for successfully carrying
out the actual Master thesis work. The project work talk should be visited
especially by all Master students, but is also targeted at the scientists
of the research group where the Master thesis is being written. The
Master colloquium is the final presentation of the Master candidate.
Again, in addition to all Master students, the scientists from the respective
research focus, geophysics or meteorology, are expected to attend.
The Master colloquium ends with a scrutiny of the examiners which the
general audience may witness but cannot pose any questions.

Twice during the time of preparation of their PhD thesis, the candidates
must give a talk within the BMD seminar series. These talks give an overview
of the current related literature, status of the PhD work and planned
research. All PhD candidates from the respective research focus, geophysics
or meteorology, are expected to attend, as well as the scientists of the
research group in which the PhD thesis is being written.

Of course, in addition to the expected audience other interested students
and university members are very welcome at any seminar.
