1. Stochastic Dust Emission Parameterization

1. Stochastic Dust Emission Parameterization

a) Dust concentration due to turbulent dust emission modelled in the framework of large-eddy simulation (Klose and Shao, 2012). Regions of high emissions are at updraft convergence lines, at downdraft centers or in the areas of vortices (red circle). (Visualization in cooperation with the University of Cologne‘s Regional Computing Centre (RRZK).

b) Different perspective of the situation shown in a) , but with particle tracing for the vortex (dust devil). The rotation of the dust devil can clearly be recognized. Also, the hexagonal structure characteristic of a convective atmospheric boundary layer can be seen.

Mesoscale Simulation

Convective dust emission in the Taklimakan Desert in China (23 - 26 March 2009) and topographical height. See Klose and Shao (2012) for details.

2. Atmosphere and Land Surface Interactions over Heterogeneous Areas

Large Eddy Simulation

Top: 10 m wind vectors and 2 m Temperature [K]. Bottom: 10 m wind vectors and latent heat flux increment (LH, in W/m²). The eddy movement can clearly be seen.

3. Miscellaneous

Numerical simulation of a cold air intrusion into the Sahara on 03 March 2004. Isosurfaces of constant specific humidity are shown colored by temperature (red means relative cooler air)
