Aims • Understanding the interactions of atmospheric radiation with atmospheric gases, aerosols, clouds and precipitation
• Knowledge of physical cloud and precipitation processes
• Overview on atmospheric energy and water cycle
• Basic knowledge of modern remote sensing methods
Skills • Solving problems in atmospheric radiation and cloud physics
• Computational techniques to address radiative transfer
• Computational experience and presentation skills
Content • Basic concepts and definitions, radiation laws, atmospheric radiation budget, absorption and scattering processes, radiative transfer in different spectral regions
• Atmospheric humidity and stability, cloud formation (homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation), Köhler theory, droplet growth, coagulation and coalescence, precipitation formation (warm and cold rain processes), Ice clouds and snow, thunderstorms
• Measurements of radiation and cloud properties, radar meteorology
Prerequisites Basics of mathematics, physics and meteorology (mandatory)
